La infertilidad afecta a millones de personas en todo el mundo. Hasta hoy, la ausencia de \u00f3vulos funcionales ha sido una barrera imposible de superar. Pero un nuevo estudio, publicado en la revista Nature Communications<\/em><\/a>, podr\u00eda cambiar esa historia para siempre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un equipo de investigadores<\/a> liderado por Nuria Mart\u00ed Guti\u00e9rrez y Shoukhrat Mitalipov, reconocidos por sus trabajos en biolog\u00eda reproductiva, ha logrado algo que parec\u00eda sacado de la ciencia ficci\u00f3n: hacer que una c\u00e9lula humana com\u00fan se comporte como un \u00f3vulo capaz de dividirse y generar vida en el laboratorio.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Este proceso experimental, llamado mitomeiosis<\/strong>, imita la forma en que los \u00f3vulos naturales reducen su carga gen\u00e9tica para poder ser fecundados. Aunque a\u00fan est\u00e1 en una fase inicial, abre una puerta hacia nuevas terapias de fertilidad. Estas podr\u00edan ayudar a personas que hoy no pueden tener hijos biol\u00f3gicos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La \u201cmitomeiosis\u201d: una nueva forma de crear vida en el laboratorio<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

El descubrimiento se basa en una t\u00e9cnica conocida como transferencia nuclear de c\u00e9lulas som\u00e1ticas<\/strong> (SCNT, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s<\/em>). En palabras simples, los cient\u00edficos tomaron el n\u00facleo de una c\u00e9lula de piel humana (que contiene el ADN de una persona)<\/strong>. Luego, lo insertaron dentro de un \u00f3vulo humano al que previamente se le hab\u00eda retirado su propio n\u00facleo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Normalmente, este tipo de manipulaci\u00f3n se usa para crear embriones clonados o para generar c\u00e9lulas madre. Pero en este caso, los investigadores fueron m\u00e1s all\u00e1. Forzaron a esa c\u00e9lula a dividirse como si estuviera en una etapa reproductiva, algo que nunca antes se hab\u00eda logrado en humanos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A este proceso lo llamaron mitomeiosis<\/strong><\/a>, porque combina caracter\u00edsticas de la mitosis<\/strong> (la divisi\u00f3n normal de las c\u00e9lulas del cuerpo) y de la meiosis<\/strong> (la divisi\u00f3n especial que da origen a los \u00f3vulos y espermatozoides).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El resultado fue sorprendente: las c\u00e9lulas lograron reducir su n\u00famero de cromosomas a la mitad<\/strong>, tal como lo hace un \u00f3vulo natural antes de ser fecundado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Para entender la magnitud del avance hay que recordar que las c\u00e9lulas humanas normales tienen 46 cromosomas (dos copias de cada uno)<\/strong>. Los \u00f3vulos y espermatozoides solo tienen 23<\/strong>, porque al unirse en la fecundaci\u00f3n se completa el n\u00famero original.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El desaf\u00edo era conseguir que una c\u00e9lula \u201ccom\u00fan\u201d, como una c\u00e9lula de piel, aprendiera a dividir su material gen\u00e9tico de forma controlada y ordenada. Todo esto sin causar errores fatales. Los cient\u00edficos lograron esto manipulando el entorno del \u00f3vulo donado. Usaron una sustancia especial que inhibe ciertas prote\u00ednas del ciclo celular para activar una se\u00f1al de divisi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As\u00ed, la c\u00e9lula \u201creprogramada\u201d empez\u00f3 a comportarse como si fuera un \u00f3vulo maduro<\/strong>, segregando su ADN en dos partes: una que se conservaba como n\u00facleo principal, y otra que se eliminaba en forma de \u201ccuerpo polar\u201d, tal como ocurre naturalmente durante la ovulaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Resultados que marcan un antes y un despu\u00e9s<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

En el estudio, los investigadores trabajaron con 270 \u00f3vulos humanos donados<\/strong> por mujeres j\u00f3venes y sanas. Esto se hizo bajo consentimiento \u00e9tico y con fines exclusivamente cient\u00edficos. Tras aplicar la t\u00e9cnica de mitomeiosis, lograron que los \u00f3vulos reprogramados redujeran su carga gen\u00e9tica hasta conservar en promedio 23 cromosomas<\/strong>, exactamente como los \u00f3vulos naturales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luego, los fertilizaron con espermatozoides humanos y observaron algo incre\u00edble: los embriones comenzaron a dividirse normalmente<\/strong>, mostrando signos de desarrollo temprano y combinando el ADN del esperma con el ADN reprogramado de la c\u00e9lula donante.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Esto demuestra que es posible crear embriones viables a partir de c\u00e9lulas som\u00e1ticas humanas<\/strong>, al menos en un entorno de laboratorio. Aunque no se trata a\u00fan de crear beb\u00e9s humanos, la t\u00e9cnica ofrece una esperanza real para millones de personas que no pueden producir \u00f3vulos funcionales. Incluye a mujeres con menopausia temprana o pacientes que perdieron su fertilidad por tratamientos m\u00e9dicos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
